CORRECTION TO STUDENT HANDBOOK On page 29 of our Student Handbook there is a correction to the Promotion topic. It should read that the promotion from 9th to 10th grade requires 6 units instead of 4 according to our Board Policy. Sorry for any inconvenience.

Our mission at Turner County High School is to provide all students with the academic, social, and career skills needed to be productive members of a technological society with the end result being a high school diploma. Our motto is "Building a legacy of distinction one student at a time!" We believe:
We encourage our parents and students to become familiar with the policies in our 2009-2010 Student Handbook, which will be issued to the students the first day of school. Both students and their parents will be asked to sign a form stating they are familiar with the policies and expectations set forth in the handbook. Our staff is committed to giving a quality education to our students and working with students and their parents to ensure the success of each student. The following are some things of which we want the public to be aware:
MORNINGS AND AFTERNOONS The Turner County High School building will open at 7:30 a.m. Students should not be dropped off at the school prior to that time. Students should report to their designated area or to the cafeteria if they are eating breakfast. High school students will be dismissed for their first class at 7:52 a.m. The school day begins promptly at 8:00 a.m. and dismisses at 3:28 p.m. Students who are assigned to after-school detention will report directly to the designated classroom. Students involved in after school programs or extracurricular activities should report directly to those areas. All other students should leave the building and the campus by 3:35 p.m. Students are not allowed in the building before or after school hours, unless accompanied by a teacher or an administrator.
ABSENCES AND EXCUSES Students are expected to be in attendance in Turner County Schools in accordance with compulsory attendance laws and for the number of full-length days prescribed by law. A student shall not be absent from school or from any class or other required school hours except for illness or other providential cause, unless with written permission of the teacher, principal, or their duly authorized school official. Any student who misses 5 or more unexcused absences in a ½ credit class will not receive credit for the class. Any student who misses 10 or more unexcused absences in a 1 credit class will not receive credit for the class. If a student has a baby during the school year, the mother will be excused for 10 calendar days from birth. If the mother has to be out because of the baby, she must bring a written note back from the baby's doctor. Absences will be considered either "excused" or "unexcused." As permitted under state law and State Board of Education policies, students may be excused for the following reasons:
Attendance is kept period by period, and students are required to attend every period of each day. Excuses/notes for absences must be handwritten, specifically stating the date(s) and reason(s) for the absence(s), furnished in writing, and must be signed and dated by the student's parent or legal guardian. Emails will not be accepted. Absences will be declared unexcused unless excuses signed by the parent are brought to school the day following the absence with a number where the school can contact the parents. All excuses will be evaluated by the principal or a designee, to determine if the absence is excused or unexcused. If a student checks out during the day, an excuse must be brought for any class period missed. Students will be required to make up all work due to absences, whether excused or unexcused. All make-up work for absences must be completed within three school days after returning from an absence unless arrangements have been made with the teacher(s). Absences due to out of school suspension shall be unexcused. Any work that is missed due to out-of-school suspension will result in a grade of zero. In cases where a student has many separate absences due to illness, the school or attendance officer may require written statements from the attending physician. RETURN TO SCHOOL AFTER AN ABSENCE OR AN EARLY RELEASEStudents must go to the front office before school begins to get an admit slip, even if they do not bring a note from home. This applies to any absence from school, late arrival to school, or early dismissal from school. Remember that attendance is recorded period by period, and students are required to attend every period of each day. The teacher will not allow the student to enter class without an admit slip. Notes submitted for regular health department appointments will excuse the student for a maximum of one class period unless specified by the health department. A note is required for students taking their children to the health department or to a doctor. When there is cause necessitating an individual student to be excused from school for a portion of the school day, the student shall be released from school only to his or her parent(s) or legal guardian(s), to a person properly identified to school authorities, or upon request by letter or telephone from the parent(s). If a student is sent back to the office to get an admit slip, they will be given a tardy for the class. Excuses are to be presented to and signed by the teacher(s) of the class(es) that were missed. The 7th period teacher will keep the excuses and turn them into the Attendance Office at the end of the day. Students who are tardy to school should bring a note from home or the doctor, dentist, etc., and get an admission slip to class from the office. If a student's attire worn to school or a car problem makes them late, the student will be given an unexcused tardy or absence based on how much time they miss from a class. A tardy student will not be admitted to class without an admit slip from the office. If a student is late due to work in another classroom, that teacher will write a note stating the reason, which the student must take to the office for an admit slip. Unexcused tardies to individual classes are addressed using discipline procedures when the student has a total of 3 or more tardies for the nine weeks.
ELECTRONIC DEVICES It is a violation of Turner County Board Policy to have an electronic device on school campus unless the device is placed in a school locker with the power off and will not be taken out of the locker until the end of the school day. Any electronic device that may detract from the normal school day is prohibited. These may include, but are not limited to, cell phones, pagers, radios, tape or CD players, headphones, iPods, or any other electronic devices.
Students found in possession will have the following steps taken.
Fines must be paid in cash in the front office. Repeat violators will necessitate further disciplinary action being taken. Confiscated electronic devices (i.e. cell phones, etc.) are subject to search. The Turner County High School and Turner County School System will not be held responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged student electronic devices.
GRADING PERIODS AND REPORT CARDS The school year is divided into four (4) nine week grading periods. Progress reports will be sent home every 3 weeks. Parents may come by the front office and pick up the report on the designated day. If not, the student will be given the progress report the following day. Report cards will be issued after each nine weeks grading period.
FINAL EXAMS EXEMPTIONS All students must take the Nine Weeks Tests at the end of the first and third Nine Weeks and Midterm Exams at the end of the First Semester. Only Seniors can exempt the final exams, if they have met all the requirements for exemption. No End-Of-Course Test (EOCT) may be exempted. The following criteria will be used by the classroom teacher to determine senior exemption of the Final Exam for a course: You CANNOT exempt a Final Exam in a class if: You have one or more unexcused absences in that class. You have been sent to ISS or suspended for any amount of time. You must take all Semester Tests that semester. You have any absences in a class and an average less than 90 for that class. You are failing a class.
You have three or more tardies for a class. You are in a course that has an End-of-Course Test. You CAN exempt a Final Exam in a class if and ONLY IF: You have a 90 or better average in that class, less than three tardies, three or less excused absences, and have not been in ISS or suspended from school. You have perfect attendance and a passing average in that class, less than three tardies, and have not been in ISS or suspended from school. Students who are required to take Finals must remain on campus until their last test is taken for the day. Students will not be allowed to "come and go" on Final Exam days. Finals will be on the last day of the year for seniors. Unexcused absences on that day will result in a grade of zero on the final. Final Exams will not be given earlier than the assigned day without permission from the principal. This serves as notice to parents or guardians who will be checking students out of school on those days. Out-of-town trips are not excused. Students in classes where an End-of-Course Test is given, and are not eligible by the test exemption policy, will be required to attend class on the Final Exam day.
PARENT CONFERENCES/PROGRESS REPORTS Open House/Parent Conference Night will be held in October and January at the end of the first and second nine weeks grading period. All parents are encouraged to attend these conferences to talk with the teachers and to pick up report cards. Parents are also encouraged to contact your child's teacher if you have questions or desire more information about your child's academic progress. Progress Reports will be sent home during each nine weeks grading period.
ZERO POLICY Our faculty and staff will try their best to encourage students to do their work and assist them in the process. They will work with the students and give them opportunities to do the required assignments, but the students at Turner County High School must do the assigned work. Students can receive a zero in a class if they do not complete the following procedures.
ELIGIBILITY Students who participate in extra-curricular activities must meet eligibility standards as outlined by the state (160-5-1-.19) Students participating in competitive interscholastic activities shall pass a minimum of five subjects carrying credit toward grade promotion in the local board-designated grading period immediately preceding participation. Exploratory subjects taken during the same quarter or semester are averaged to count as one subject for eligibility purposes. Student eligibility shall be determined at the end of the first and second semesters. If a student loses credit due to a Lack of Attendance (excessive absences) in 3 or more courses, the student becomes ineligible from that point on .
GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS Students must pass all sections of the Georgia High School Graduation Test in order to graduate. The course requirements depend on the type of diploma the student chooses to receive - a Technical and Career Prep diploma that concentrates course work in one vocational area, a more difficult college preparatory diploma, or a dual seal diploma. Students are bound to graduation requirements from their ninth grade year.
GRADUATION CEREMONONY Graduation is a special time and must be valued by every student in the school. The administration will not permit inappropriate behavior at graduation practice or graduation ceremony. Students are required to purchase a cap and gown from the vender the school designated. Students cannot wear cap and gowns from previous years. Members of the graduating class must have met all requirements in order to participate in the graduation ceremony. This includes passing the appropriate number of units and all parts to the Georgia High School Graduation Test. Fines and fees must be cleared. If a graduate owes money, no diploma will be awarded and no transcript will be sent.

These guidelines are set to allow fashionable and acceptable dress directives for all students. Common sense and courtesy will make it work.
